We were thrilled to see Heated Rivalry’s continu We were thrilled to see Heated Rivalry’s continued success with its record-breaking haul at the #CdnScreenAwards!⁠ ⁠ The show’s wonderful cast also won the Members’ Choice Series Ensemble Award at the 24th ACTRA Awards in Toronto, proudly presented by AFBS. Hear from cast members Harrison Browne, Slavic Rogozine and Callan Potter, with a special appearance by Nadine Bhabha (who was also our awards show host!) on the #ACTRAAwards winners' red carpet with Gabriella de la Torre. Nadine also won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Guest Performance, Drama Series for Heated Rivalry!⁠ ⁠ Congratulations to Nadine, Harrison, Slavic, Callan and the entire Heated Rivalry team. We had an amazing time at the CFC Comedy Series La We had an amazing time at the CFC Comedy Series Lab Industry Showcase! The lab supports a new generation of comedy creators as they develop bold, original series for the Canadian and global marketplace. ⁠ ⁠ The showcase featured a hilarious conversation between lab showrunner and lead mentor Nelu Handa and Anthony Q. Farrell, and introduced lab writers Isabella Shibuta, Sandi Rankaduwa, Yemie Sonuga and Jezabel Bamberg. Congratulations to them all!
ACTRA Toronto is alarmed the Government of Canada ACTRA Toronto is alarmed the Government of Canada has backpedalled on its promise to have multi-national streamers pay their fair share into Canada’s production ecosystem by making Canadian taxpayers foot the bill through the government’s new $600 million fund per year, for Canada’s broadcasting and cultural sector.⁠ ⁠ “Instead of following through on their promise at the CMPA’s Prime Time in Ottawa conference this past January of ‘protecting a nation that welcomes storytellers, listens to their stories and celebrates our differences,’ we are seeing the government placate to streaming giants and the U.S. Administration in advance of CUSMA negotiations,” said ACTRA Toronto President Kate Ziegler.⁠ ⁠ “ACTRA Toronto looks forward to participating in the government’s upcoming consultations to develop new policy directions about the Online Streaming Act’s implementation. Today marks a solemn day for thousands of performers across the country who have been impacted by a devastating commercial dispute. Our lives as artists are precarious and the decimation of a vital source of income has been grief inducing for many of us. Myself included.⁠ ⁠ In fact that goes for many of your elected leaders who were inspired to lean in out of this crisis. For 1500 days we have not put this fight down. ⁠ ⁠ And we certainly aren’t satisfied with the status quo. What a wonderful night it was at The Porter screen What a wonderful night it was at The Porter screening and discussion at the Mayworks Festival!⁠ ⁠ The incredible panel was moderated by Arnold Pinnock (creator, writer, producer and actor) with assistance from ACTRA Toronto President Kate Ziegler. The panel included cast members Olunike Adeliyi, Kevin Hanchard, Adrian Walters as well as Marsha Green (showrunner, writer and executive producer), plus Juan-Yahya Gairey, a descendant of Harry Gairey, a sleeping car porter & "grandfather" of the Toronto Black Community. ⁠ ⁠ Special thanks to Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU), Sphere Media, the Paradise Theatre, Mayworks Festival, and of course all of our fellow unions who attended in solidarity. It was an experience we'll never forget.
