Spotlight: 2024 Breakthroughs Film Festival

ACTRA Toronto members are in the spotlight at the 13th annual Breakthroughs Film Festival (BFF) – the only Canadian film festival dedicated to presenting short films by emerging women and non-binary filmmakers.

From December 6 to 8, BFF will showcase four ACTRA Toronto shorts.

Below you’ll find a round-up of ACTRA Toronto productions at this year’s festival and the talented casts of ACTRA Toronto Members who bring these stories to life.

DANDELION GREEN

Dandelion Green is a short, coming-of-age film that explores the friendship of two queer foster kids Olivia and Kay. Kay, a non-binary, guarded teen, is weeks away from ageing out of the system. Olivia, a 16-year-old budding artist, acts as a support system for her mother, who suffers from mental illness. When both teens are forced to move homes again, their chance encounter in the same Toronto foster home transforms the way they envision themselves and their future.

In a flashback, Andre meets Yasir in a diner, an old friend who sold him out for less jail time, in hopes of reconciliation. Andre informs him of the rehabilitation program of which he is part of, and when Yasir learns that reconciliation is merely one of the steps of the program, tensions rise. Deflecting, he provides the contact information of Jasmine, Andre’s estranged daughter, to fulfill this step of the program. Andre seeks out his daughter, but gets defeated when learning she has a son. Coming back to the present, Andre has a fruitful conversation regarding self worth with Darnel, that instills a bit of hope in the both of them.
