We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate ACTRA Toro We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate ACTRA Toronto Members Philip Akin ➡️ and Brenda Kamino, who were both appointed Members of the Order of Canada!

Philip is a trailblazing actor, director and cultural force and has shaped stage and screen for more than 50 years. At a time when there were few Black performers on Canadian television, he inspired many. Notably, he co‑founded Obsidian Theatre, through which he championed Black artists and reshaped Canada’s theatrical landscape for future generations.

Brenda is a distinguished actor whose career spans 50 years and more than 100 stage, television and screen productions. A champion of equitable representation who advocates non-traditional casting, she expanded opportunities for marginalized artists and transformed diversity in Canada’s performing arts. A beloved mentor, she is the co-producer of the Renaissance Canadian Theatre Company.

The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest honours. It recognizes people across all sectors of society who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to our nation.

Happy Pride from ACTRA Toronto! 🏳️‍🌈🏳 Happy Pride from ACTRA Toronto! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ It was a wonderful day as we marched alongside many friends and allies at the Toronto Pride Parade. We had so many incredible moments with the thousands celebrating today as we marched to ensure 2SLGBTQIA+ stories continue to be seen on screen by talented professional performers!

Thank you to our @outactrato Co-Chairs @rose.madelaine and @mattlemche for their leadership, our Pride Ambassador (and #ACTRAAwards winner) @cihang_ma, Parade Committee Chair @im2fancy_ alongside ACTRA Toronto Executive, Council and Staff for their dedicated support, and of course all the ACTRA Toronto Members who joined us to march today!

Across the province, ACTRA Toronto members are gea Across the province, ACTRA Toronto members are gearing up to celebrate our 2SLGBTQIA+ members, friends, and communities, and to recognize the talent, creativity, and leadership they bring to our union and to Canada's screens and airwaves.

As performers, we know stories have the power to shape culture, challenge prejudice and change our society for the better. Let’s tell those stories.

Representation matters. Every performer deserves to work in an industry where they are safe, respected, and free to be their authentic selves. Pride has always been more than a celebration. Pride is political. It’s a reminder that the rights and freedoms won through decades of activism cannot be taken for granted.

The reality of ongoing inequities facing 2SLGBTQIA+ communities highlights the importance of continued advocacy on 2SLGBTQIA+ rights both on set and in our communities. It makes our solidarity more important than ever.

Take Pride. ACTRA Toronto is committed to advancing equity, inclusion, and dignity for all performers, and to supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ communities today and throughout the year.

Today, we renew that commitment to stand up for 2SLGBTQIA+ members’ rights and celebrate the artists whose voices enrich our union and Canada’s cultural industries.

Happy Pride from ACTRA Toronto. 🏳️‍🌈

We know balancing creative work and caregiving responsibilities isn't easy. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to building a more accessible and sustainable industry for performers and their families.

Thanks to Level UP!, we're excited to explore members' evolving needs through this pilot and work toward expanding caregiver support offerings in the future.
