Today marks Alistair Hepburn’s last day as Execu Today marks Alistair Hepburn’s last day as Executive Director with ACTRA Toronto before he moves on to his new adventure.⁠ ⁠ Alistair joined ACTRA Toronto in January 2016 as Director of the Film, Television and Digital Media department before being appointed Executive Director in September 2022. Over Alistair’s tenure at ACTRA Toronto, he has been instrumental in strengthening performer protections in all agreements; implementing a new suite of Low Budget Agreement options, including the first-ever for theatre productions during the COVID pandemic; and, most recently, playing a large role in amending Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act’s (OHSA) Diving Operations Regulation to recognize the screen industry.⁠ ⁠ “Alistair has truly gone above and beyond over his time at ACTRA Toronto,” says ACTRA Toronto President Kate Ziegler. “To have one of the most accomplished, creative, labour-grounded and caring leaders guiding our union during a period of profound political, cultural and economic upheaval has been a true boon to our membership. On a personal note, I am grateful to have had Alistair by my side in my first year as President where I had the opportunity to learn a great deal about our industry and about navigating complex situations with clarity and confidence.”⁠ ⁠ “After 10 extraordinary years, saying goodbye to ACTRA Toronto is both deeply emotional and leaves me with deep gratitude,” says Alistair Hepburn. “It has been the honour of my professional life to serve a membership that is passionate, principled and unwavering in its belief that performers matter. Together, with your smart and engaged elected leaders, we navigated moments of growth, challenge and change, always grounded in the collective strength of this union.”⁠ ⁠ Added Hepburn: “I am immensely thankful for the remarkable staff of ACTRA Toronto. Their intelligence, grit, care for members and relentless work ethic made every achievement possible. They show up every day with integrity and heart, and this organization is stronger because of them. ACTRA Toronto will always be part of who I am. I leave proud of what we built together and confident in the future of this community.”
Like so many people in Canada and around the world Like so many people in Canada and around the world, we were deeply saddened to hear of Catherine O’Hara’s passing. She was one of those rare performers whose work felt both global and deeply Canadian. Catherine’s career is rooted in Toronto’s comedy and performance community, and this foundation really mattered. She was shaped by ensemble work, collaboration and risk-taking, values that still define much of Canada’s performing arts culture today. For ACTRA members, she represented what was possible when Canadian talent is nurtured, supported and encouraged to grow. She helped redefine what comedic performance could be: smart, fearless, profoundly human and multi-faceted. From live sketch and improv to film and television, Catherine brought intelligence, generosity, sass and vulnerability to every role. Her success showed you did not have to leave your identity at the border to succeed internationally. And her unique sense of humour lifted even the most cynical of spirits. Catherine’s career reminds performers that longevity comes from craft, collaboration and integrity. She was respected not just for her talent, but for how she worked, how she treated collaborators and how she elevated the people around her. Many ACTRA members saw her as proof that a sustainable, meaningful career was possible in this industry. Her work will continue to inspire generations of performers, writers and creators. She helped shape the global perception of Canadian comedy and storytelling, often without seeking the spotlight for herself. Catherine’s legacy will long outlive any single role. Today is about gratitude. Gratitude for the joy she brought, the careers she influenced and the standard she set. Our thoughts are with Catherine’s family, friends and collaborators, and with everyone who felt connected to her work.
